Enjoy this private experience with Our Lady of the Rocks Church, considered the crown jewel of the Bay of Kotor.
Your friendly skipper will greet you in the town of Kotor, the namesake for Europe’s
southernmost fjord. Enjoy the wondrous sights of “the Bride of the Adriatic Sea”
as you journey across the Bay, sure to become your own personal heaven. The beautiful islet of Our Lady of the Rocks is the only man-made one in the Bay. It was created in honour of a special stone two fishermen found, as it had an image of St. Mary chiseled into its side. From then on, local sailors and fishermen alike threw stones where the Lady had been
found, vowing to honour the spot of this unlikely discovery. These rocks soon grew into an
island, and soon became home to Our Lady of the Rocks Church in the 15th century.
Inside the church, you’ll be able to explore a vast collection of votive tablets and various works
by renown painter Tripo Kokolja, a Kotor native regarded as a master of his craft. You’ll also be
able to view the Icon of Our Lady of the Rocks, one of the many wonders you’ll find in these
fairytale parts.
One particular piece stands out among the rest in the Church: a votive tapestry embroidered by
Perast native Jacinta Kunić-Mijović. The tapestry, initially designed while she waited for her
lover to return from a long journey, was a massive undertaking. It took her twenty-five years to
make, though she sadly went blind before she could complete it. The tapestry was made with
strands of Kunić-Mijović’s hair, which turned its fibres from gold to silver as the years went on. It
serves as a spectacular showcase both of the passage of time and of one woman’s
determination across decades.
